A Microchip that consumes 30,000 times less power in sleep mode and 10 times less power in Active mode that existing chips has been Developed.
Named Phoenix Processor , it is intended for sensor-based devices like implants, environment monitors or surveillance equipment. The Chip consumes just 30 picowatts in sleep mode.A picowatt is one-trillionth of a watt.Theoretically , the energy in a watch battery can tun the Phinix for 263 Years !!.
The Phoenix’s battery is much smaller that todays or conventional processor systems. Its battery is as thin as film. You can consider an example , laptop battery is Much bigger than that of its Small processor.

This Phoenix Processor has been developed by University of Michigan, The design of Phoenix processor will be presented on June 20 2008 at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ Symposium on VLSI Circuits.
These types of very Small , portable processors can be used in many areas, now they can be used in Defence fields, Scientific measurements. One of the best part of the Phoenix Processor is its power consumption and hence offcource the battery life and overall system size.
Such low power chips are not of the same ilk being developed by Intel with its Atom family. The Atom family of low-power chips are destined for a new class of mini-laptops like the Asus Eee PC, as well as even smaller Internet devices. They compete with chips from Broadcom, Via Technologies, Arm and others.
